Stainless steel fasteners (screws, nuts, bolts and washers) are resistant to corrosion, staining, and do not corrode as easily as steel fasteners. The difference from carbon steel fasteners is the amount of chromium added to the steel. Carbon steel oxidizes (rusts) when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is defined as an active film that accelerates further oxidation thereby disrupting the metal''s structure. Stainless steel fasteners, when exposed to air, creates a passive film of chromium oxide which prevents further surface oxidation and blocks corrosion.The stainless steel fasteners with metric size are regulated by the DIN-EN-ISO-AFNOR-UNI-BS: 3506 standard, sections: 1, 2, 3, 4.
