William McPherson started bolt making in Victoria in 1904 under the brand name of ACME. The name later changed to Ajax, and a bolt-making factory emerged in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond. From those small beginnings Ajax Fasteners Group now boasts the manufacture and import of more than 15,000 different fasteners crucial for the automotive, construction, mining, defence, and manufacturing industries. Since the 1920’s Ajax has been the major producer of bolt and nut products in Australia, and has contributed products to projects that have influenced Australian building. Notably, the company’s manufacture of millions of solid rivets for the construction of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Southern Stand at the MCG and the 2000 Olympics Sydney Aquatic Centre.
